At Warke’s Deli we love the stories of how our suppliers came to be in business almost as much as we love their products. Next to feature in our blog – ‘Made In Warke’s Deli’ is Mike’s Fancy Cheese.
We all agree the best things in life are truly enhanced when shared with others. This is true in almost every aspect of life including food, ideas and money.
And it was the sharing of an idea that led to the sharing of money to produce a great product for Michael Thomson from Newtownards.
Mike’s Fancy Cheese is Northern Ireland’s first raw milk cheese. The Young Buck product is certainly creating an enthusiastic following.
Michael has always been a cheese enthusiast from his days at the Arcadia Deli in Belfast to being a cheese making student at the School of Artisan Food in Nottinghamshire.
After graduating Michael gained experience at some of the UK’s leading cheesemakers before going on to become head cheesemaker at Sparkenhoe farm.
But his desire to return home proved to be too strong. Armed with the experience of studying and working in the cheese industry and backed by 98 investors through the crowdfunding platform, Seedrs, Michael returned home to set up his own company.
Mike’s Fancy Cheese is now operating out of Newtownards and buying milk from a single herd. His Young Buck is a real first for Northern Ireland.
His depth of knowledge about the product and his passion for cheesemaking meant he was the perfect person for us to share our shelves with.
Now that’s a story worth spreading.
